Nelson is a city located in the Southern Interior of British Columbia, Canada. Its impressive collection of restored heritage buildings dating back to a regional silver rush makes it a perfect location for Nelson video production. Its closeness to the Selkirk Mountains and Kootenay Lake only strengthens its position among the best nature videography locations in BC. Great places where you can shoot are Monica Meadows, Kokanee Glacier Park or Baker Street.
Nelson was part of the traditional territories of the Sinixt (or Lakes) and Ktunaxa (Kutenai) peoples. Following the discovery of silver and gold in Toad Mountain in 1886 led to a town boom, leading to incorporation in 1897. Due to its location near transportation corridors, Nelson grew to supply the local mining activity and soon became a transportation and distribution centre for the region. Nelson was named in 1888 after Hugh Nelson, then Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia.
The city’s commitment to preserving and promoting its heritage and arts and culture makes it an attractive location for filmmakers and other creative professionals.
Affirmation of Nelson’s beauty came in 1986 when Steve Martin chose to produce his feature film Roxanne largely in the city, utilizing the local fire hall as a primary set and many historic locations for others.
Nelson Canadian Pacific Railway Station
Nelson train station is a two-storey, wood-frame building, built in 1900. It is a prime spot for videography, if you ask me. The prominent hipped roof, projecting bays, the wide-eaved platform canopy, profusion of dormers and variety of finishes makes it harmonious in styles and materials. The station even appears in the 2012 film “The Tall Man”.

A great opportunity for video production is a mural festival in Nelson. Street artists, muralists, creators, and art enthusiasts join the festival from the local, national, and international art scene. It is a great opportunity to capture the cultural vibrancy in Nelson.
Nelson Museum, Archives & Gallery
The Nelson Museum, Archives & Gallery is located in a stunning 1902 heritage building in the heart of the historic downtown district. Its unique architecture, featuring a composite of Chateauesque and Richardsonian Romanesque styles, combines various materials including granite, Kaslo marble, and brick to create a visually striking structure. The building has a rich history, having served as a facility for various government services before becoming home to the museum. Its grand scale and elaborate design make it an ideal setting for video production, offering endless opportunities for capturing stunning footage. Its continued public use and adaptive reuse as a museum further adds to its visual appeal and potential for Nelson videography.
Baker Street
As the Heritage Capital of BC, Nelson has a high concentration of beautifully restored heritage buildings that add to the charming atmosphere of the city. And Baker Street is home to a number of them. Many of the houses were featured in films such as “Roxanne,” “Housekeeping,” and “Snow Falling on Cedars.” These buildings, which include the Savoy Hotel, Dancing Bear Inn, Sherbrooke Hotel, Duke Hyssop Labour Centre, and the Court House, among others, offer endless opportunities for visually appealing video production.
As I mentioned above, Nelson is situated in the heart of the Rockies and it is sometimes dubbed as the best of the best of BC’s Great Outdoors. Let’s find the best sceneries for Nelson video production.
